1953 Fletcher Flair
the Fletcher Flair at Glenmoor Gathering, Canton OH
The Fletcher Flair was a prototype amphibious vehicle designed and created by Wendell Fletcher of Fletcher Aviation in 1953. The US Government had issued a solicitation for bids to build an amphibious vehicle based on the VW Schwimmwagen used by Germany in WWII. The all aluminum Fletcher design was powered by a 4-cylinder Porsche 356 drivetrain, modified to make it a four-wheel drive. The company hoped to sell the vehicle to the US Army but the vehicle performed poorly in the water and the Army passed on producing it.
